Saving lives is love.
Donate to the Red Cross: US, UK, Int.
Donate to another organization

The official death toll today stands at 80,000 people. (Update: as of January 1st, the estimated toll is over 150,000. I'll try to keep this number up to date.) Rescue organisations really, really need money to get food, medicine and supplies to these areas as fast as they possibly can. As [info]helenmelon says in this post, a little money goes a very long way in these areas. Even if you give $5, you will be saving someone's life - if you give more, you'll be doing even more good. I just gave $50, and I'd be delighted if even a tiny fraction of the Internet community did the same; by Helen's figures, that would pay for over 200 meals at street prices; imagine how many people it could help at the buying power an organization like the Red Cross commands.

I would like to come up with something more clever to spread the word, but I can't. So if you'd like to very easily, with next to no effort to yourself, spread the message, drop the code in the box below into your journal. There are 5 and a half million users on LiveJournal; if each of them gave $5, that would be $27.5 million dollars, a figure approaching the aid promised by the entire US government. Even if a fraction of users give, it will make an enormous impact.

Thanks for the banner. I, too, gave fifty dollars, and I'll put it up so other people know to do the same.

Perhaps you could make it so that when people try to access R&M and the Benblog, they see an information page regarding the effort, and can only access the homepage after thirty seconds or so. I'm not sure if that is based in reality, though, as I am inter-stupid.

Donating and pasting the code. Thanks for the information.

I can't use a credit card to send via Amazon, since I'm only 16, but I do intend to find a more direct way to send money to the Red Cross.

I'm also considering starting something at school, though I have to get off christmas break to get into that.

I'm gonna post this in my journal.

Hi there! You don't know me, I was skimming around on friends friends and saw your bar for donations. I hope you don't mind but I've put it in my own LJ as well. I think this is a lovely thing and if it encourages even one person to make a contribution it will have been a wonderful effort.

Cheers!

Could you change the code to the updated death toll? I've been spreading this around and everyone would like the correct number. Sorry if you are busy, however.

Thanks.

I've changed the text in my post to the correct number, but can't very easily create a death toll graphic that you can stick in your own pages. Nonetheless, I'll try and create one today.

this is going to get plastered all over the place and kill your bandwidth. You have a paid account, so you might want to use ScrapBook, LJ's photo hosting space. Paid members have a free account there. http://pics.livejournal.com

Hi - no worries, I've got bandwidth sorted out. The picture is hosted on the server that runs Rum and Monkey (I'm co-editor), which has a lot of bandwidth at its disposal.
